I got an email today from an old friend, he’d just finished reading my new book.
I wanted to tell you what a great book it was. At times very brave (yeah, don't think I'd want my parents reading that chapter either) but also very honest. I loved how you included the mistakes and the failed attempts as well as the successes and there's certainly a few things I'm going to try after your recommendation (I won't report back). It was good to see some of the threads running through the book. For example I felt it was very much a book about men's mental health, without explicitly saying it was. Finally, what I really liked is that it wasn't preachy and I don't think anyone would feel looked down on for not doing any of these things already. Anyway, I'm sure you don't need my notes/critique but safe to say it's really good stuff and I hope it finds you success (whatever that might mean).
I’ve been a little crap at self promotion and his email has spurred me on a little - I mean do want people to read this book after all!
(so thanks, you know who you are).
He’s done a good job of summing up what I hoped the book would be. I wrote it for men who might have been going through some of the same problems as I faced. Although, I have to say that many women who have read it have found some benefits too.
You see, I believe we are all fish in birdcages. That is to say that we are strong and vital people in the wrong place. We might only be broken because what we think is normal is not.
To quote from New Wild Order.
We sit wrong, we are over fed but malnourished, sunlight deficient, overly competitive, sedentry and sleep deprived. Our blood pressure and stress levels are at record highs and our mental health at record lows. Our eyes are strained from looking at screens all the time, and our backs are killing us. We buy far too much of what we don’t need, and we aren’t even pooing in the right position!
I hope you get one with it. I crafted it very much with the reader in mind. I wanted it to be entertaining, informative, and accessible enough that most people will get on with it without having to reach for a dictionary.
I’ve tried to be as honest as possible about everything. I mean, what’s the point otherwise? I inform readers of my mistakes and triumphs in trying to rewild my life.
I could really do with some help getting out into the world.
